Position and fit matter most for heart-rate accuracy. For lifting or boxing, move it to the upper arm to reduce noise from wrist movement.

How WHOOP reads your heart

WHOOP 5.0 and MG use an optical (PPG) sensor that tracks changes in the blood under your skin, together with an accelerometer and a skin-temperature sensor, capturing data 26 times a second. The optical sensor works best held still against the skin where blood flows well, so movement, stray light and anything between the sensor and your skin are the main reasons readings drift.

On the wrist: about a finger above the bone

Where WHOOP recommends wearing it. Tap the image to see it full size.

WHOOP recommends wearing it about one finger’s width above the wrist bone; some of its pages say about an inch (2.5 cm), which comes to much the same. The narrowest part of the wrist has bones that move as you use your hand, which unsettles the sensor. Wear it any closer to the bone and accuracy drops, but two fingers higher is still fine as long as it stays snug.

As for left or right, WHOOP’s current 5.0 and MG guidance doesn’t say. The 4.0 set-up guide used to suggest your non-dominant arm, and if you take ECG readings on a WHOOP MG, wear it on the wrist you chose in the app.

How snug is snug?

WHOOP’s help pages give three quick checks: the band doesn’t slide up and down as you move your hand, no green light leaks out from under the device, and you can’t easily slip a finger under the sensor. If any of these fail, tighten it a little.

Snug isn’t the same as tight. A band that’s too tight can irritate your skin, and WHOOP itself suggests loosening it slightly if your skin gets red, while keeping it snug.

Lifting and boxing: move to the upper arm

In sports where the wrist moves fast and bends a lot, such as weightlifting and boxing, the optical signal picks up a lot of noise. WHOOP suggests moving the sensor somewhere that moves less than your hands, such as the upper arm, torso or calf, using WHOOP Body apparel or bands. On the upper arm, wear it on the thickest part; the 5.0 and MG bicep band is designed to sit halfway between the biceps and triceps.

WHOOP 5.0 and MG are validated for the wrist, upper arm, torso, waist and leg. For sleep, though, WHOOP recommends the wrist, since some features are limited on the upper arm, and on the MG, ECG and Blood Pressure Insights need the wrist.

What throws readings off

A loose or sliding band.

Fast wrist movement during exercise.

Bright light getting under the sensor.

Sweat, dirt, lotion or sunscreen under the sensor.

Cold, which reduces blood flow near the skin.

Tattoos, skin tone and body hair, which have a slight effect on the optical signal.

The last one you can’t change and needn’t worry about. The rest come down to position, fit and a clean sensor; how to clean the band and sensor is in our band-care guide.

Water, saunas and charging

WHOOP 5.0 and MG are rated IP68 to 10 metres: fine for showers, pools and the sea, but not for diving or scuba.

Rinse with fresh water after sunscreen, chlorine or insect repellent.

WHOOP gives a working range of roughly −9 to 60°C (15–140°F). Most saunas run hotter than that, so leave it outside.

You can charge while wearing it by sliding on the wireless PowerPack; the Basic Charger works off the wrist.

Never charge the PowerPack while it is wet.

With a metal Meridian band, take the band off before wireless charging; the metal interferes with it.

Both 5.0 and MG last 14 days or more per charge.

If you have a WHOOP MG (Life)

The WHOOP MG, which many people call the Life model, adds Heart Screener, a 30-second ECG taken through contacts on the band’s clasp, and Blood Pressure Insights, which WHOOP describes as wellness information, not a medical device. 5.0 and MG bands swap freely, but a regular or third-party band on an MG can’t take ECG readings: that needs an MG band with conductive contacts in the clasp, used while the device is dry. Everything else works as normal. ECG is only offered in some countries; WHOOP keeps the current list on its Regional Feature Availability page.

A band you’ll want to wear all day

The best band is one you can keep wearing without wanting to take it off. If you are choosing between fabric and silicone, see the SportFlex vs SuperKnit Luxe comparison below. For bands in our shop, match the product to your device before buying: SuperKnit Luxe fits WHOOP 5.0, while SportFlex fits WHOOP 5.0 and MG and includes ECG contacts. Neither fits WHOOP 4.0.

Common questions

<details class="wp-block-details lm-faq__item is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can I swim with WHOOP?

The device is rated IP68 to 10 metres, so yes, but fabric bands aren’t waterproof. WHOOP recommends a waterproof band such as its own SportFlex for swimming, and a fresh-water rinse after chlorine or sea water.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details lm-faq__item is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Why does my heart rate look off when I lift?

Bending and moving the wrist quickly adds noise to the optical sensor. Try a snugger fit, or move the sensor to the thickest part of your upper arm while you train.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details lm-faq__item is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Do WHOOP 4.0 bands fit 5.0 or MG?

No. WHOOP states that 4.0 bands and 5.0 / MG bands are not cross-compatible.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details lm-faq__item is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Do WHOOP 5.0 bands fit WHOOP MG (Life)?

Yes, they swap freely, but a regular band on an MG can’t take ECG readings; that needs an MG band with contacts in the clasp. Everything else works as normal.

</details>

SportFlex vs SuperKnit Luxe

How to clean your band

WHOOP, WHOOP 5.0, WHOOP MG, WHOOP Body, SportFlex, SuperKnit and LeatherLuxe are trademarks of WHOOP, Inc.
